What You Need to Know About Depression

When you have a mental health disorder you don’t see the world as it really is. Therefore, you will have a hard time trying to live your life normally. And it is not easy at all to face it because the mental disorder itself can alienate people and sink them so deep that it is hard for the sufferer to realize that they have a problem.

This is the case with depression. Depression is a state in which the individual has their disposition to act truncated by the state of their mood. This can deteriorate the person’s ability to concentrate, it makes them feel sad for extended periods of time and affects their thoughts.

The action celebrity Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson knows these symptoms very well. He has faced them three times during the course of his life. Dwayne shared in 2014 that the feeling was new and unknown to him and that he didn’t know what to expect from it. A year later, he dug deeper into the issue in Oprah’s Master Class podcast. There the successful wrestler-turned-actor said that he wished someone talked to him directly about it, and gave him hope.

The 46-year-old actor had a series of injuries that led him to fail to be drafted to the NFL and then the CFL. He was also facing financial struggle, and when he was sent home, he fell into a deep depression. Then, according to Dwayne himself, every day during his depression, he could not do anything else than clean the walls of his parent’s small apartment during a long period of time.

It has been proven that The Rock’s experience is not an uncommon one. A study in the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Psychiatry found that men express depression in “a trajectory of emotional distress manifest in avoidant, numbing and scape behaviors”. These behaviors can range from aggression to violence and suicide.

How to recognize depression?

Depression can present itself with a variety of symptoms. These can be physical and psychological. If you happen to observe some of the following symptoms check with a professional soon:

  • Continuous sadness: the individual feels sad in general but also moves and speaks more slowly than usual.
  • There is a general lack of energy: common activities are almost impossible. There is no energy to eat to wake up or even to have sex.
  • Feeling hopeless and with low self-esteem.
  • Being intolerant and irritable: This can be also related to finding it difficult to fall asleep at night and therefore being exhausted in the morning.
  • Finding hard to make decisions: the person feels tired to make decisions or feels a blurry mind that doesn’t allow him to think clearly.

There is also a social aspect of depression that cannot be missed. People with severe depression start having troubles at work and they stop taking part in social activities. Even hobbies and interests can be neglected. A person with depression will see his or her life affected and also the lives of those around him or her.

How to deal with depression?

If you think you may have some of the symptoms described above, these are some tips to cope with depression that you can apply to your life. Remember that checking out with a therapist is always the best option.


Exercising 20 minutes a day can produce enough endorphins to make you feel better. Your body will also be in better shape so you won’t feel sore or tired all the time. Improving blood circulation will oxygen your brain so as not to feel foggy.

Hang out more

Socializing is important to be in a good mood. It will give your mind a break from daily worries and you will strengthen your family bonds. Having someone to talk to is very important.

This is one aspect that Dwayne mentioned he needed when he was going through his depression.

Don’t drink

Many people with depression turn to drinking to go numb and forget about their problems. But it is easy to see that you are not solving a problem, you are creating a new one. It is better to try and have a healthy diet in order to keep your body fit and able to cope with the amount of stress you are dealing with.
